The Programme for Applied Ethics was established in 2001. It has been financed by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and is hosted by the Faculty of Arts.

Interdisciplinarity is the guiding principle for the programme. We define "applied ethics" as a combination of ethical and some specialist professional expertise. Applied ethics is a central component in many research projects, and an increasing number of PhD researchers have a close working relationship with the Programme.
The medical and biotechnological research fields are especially active in applied ethics, but applied ethics is also a central component in many ongoing activities in media studies, information technology and in the technological sciences.
The programme is governed by a board drawn from a number of faculties, and it is managed by Associate Professor May Thorseth in the Department of Philosophy.
